Lewis Brinkley

Lewis Brinkley was born in Lebanon, TN on May 12, 1898 and died
23 September, 1958.  Estelle Scales Brinkley was born 8 July 1904 in Bartlett, Texas, in Williamson County, and died in 1987.

J. H. Brinkley, Lewis' father, owned and operated a grocery store in Murfreesboro. Lewis and J.H.'s daughter, Ethel, were also grocers in the Murfreesboro area.  The Stores

Lewis and Estelle Brinkley came to their store on the square in the early 1930s and remained until about 1950, at which time they moved to a new store on the corner of Tennessee Blvd and East Main (which formerly belonged to Ethel and Bob Bowling).  They did a flourishing business during their entire business career.

Lewis and Estelle Brinkley were accommodating people.  They worked hard and followed good business rules.

In the 1930s Lewis had 3 porters who delivered all the market orders on bicycles, as did most of the other grocery stores about the square.  Later deliveries were made in a panel truck.

Estelle's twin sister, Mazelle, had a beauty parlor located just off the square on East Main Street in the building now occupied by the City Cafe.  The City Cafe was originally located two stores up towards the courthouse.

Their son, Lewis Brinkley, Jr., organized an orchestra in his later high school days.  The band became popular and played throughout middle Tennessee for several years.
