Carl and Connie were married
Carl Henry Wiggs was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on 1 December, 1925, the
youngest of 4 children. He attended
Missionary Ridge
Grammar,
Brainerd
Junior High, and
Central High Schools, all in Chattanooga. He served with
the 6th Armored Division, 50th Armored Infantry Battalion, during World War II
in the Ardennes and Rhineland Campaigns in Europe. After his discharge
from service he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During
his sophomore year he married Connie Olsen (born August 11, 1930 in Red Bank,
Tennessee). They lived until his graduation in a veteran's
trailer village
on campus. He was employed as a civil engineer by the Tennessee Valley
Authority in Knoxville, Tennessee, and by the U. S. Corps of Engineers in
Tullahoma, Tennessee.
In 1953 Carl, Connie, and their children, Connie Lee and Chip, moved to
Montgomery, Alabama. Carl was employed for 35 years as an estimator and
chief estimator for Blount Brothers Construction Company, a general contractor,
which later became Blount International Limited. During this time
Catherine, Cindy, and Carol were born. Since Carl was out of town
often, Connie, in addition to caring for the children, carried the
responsibility for running the household. In fact, she purchased their
first house while Carl was out of town. Connie also volunteered for
several years working with handicapped children. She was very active in
the Miniature Association and won several awards for her work.
A few of the construction projects with which Carl was associated were the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana; the Federal penitentiary in Marion, Illinois (which replaced Alcatraz); Complex 37 at Cape Kennedy, Florida, from which the first moon landing was launched; Complex 39A and Crawlerway, which is now being used for shuttle launches; and a $2 billion university in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Carl retired in 1988. He and Connie remained in Montgomery, Alabama.
Connie was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1996 and died August 25, 1999. Carl and Connie were married for 51 years.
