Robert Ajax Overby & Nancy Martin Brown

You can find references to Robert Ajax Overbey on various internet sites dealing with genealogy, including the LDS site. He is usually referred to as Robert A. (Jobe) Overbey or Overby. The name (Jobe) is because people have misread an old Bible entry. The Bible entry is in bad handwriting and can be deciphered as Robert A. (Jobe) Overbey or as Robert Ajacks Overbey. Occasionally, he may have written his name Ajacks, but I am reasonably sure that the proper spelling is Ajax--he had an uncle of that name---Ajax Royster.

Robert Ajax Overbey was the son of Henderson Overbey and Elizabeth Royster. He was the grandson of Peter Z. Overbey and Ann Yancey. The Overbey name was probably originally Overbury--from an English family. You can find LDS internet records for Sir Giles Overbury, an Englishman whose son was an immigrant to Virginia.

The Browns are less certain. Nancy Martin Brown was the daughter of Jesse Franklin Brown and Phebe (no O) Parks. J. F. Brown appears to have been the son of William Brown and Nancy Martin Isbell. Again, you can find on the internet information as to them. Most of that information says that William Brown was from a line of English Quakers. Personally, I cannot reconstruct the evidence supporting that conclusion, and I think the conclusion is open to question. The William Brown who married Nancy Martin Isbell seems to have had connections with Virginia families other than those connected to the Quaker line that is assinged to him by so many of the internet sources.

Nancy Martin Isbell is reportedly the daughter of Nancy Martin and Livingston Isbell. They seem to have been from Virginia, but lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Livingston died fairly early, and Nancy Martin raised four daughters, essentially on her own.  (Information supplied by Brown Wallace)
